LIFE + European Union grant

life-labelLIFE+ is the European Union's financial instrument for supporting conservation of the environment and nature as well as sustainable development.

The general objective of LIFE+ is to contribute to implementing, updating and developing EU law and policy on the environment and especially integrating environmental concerns into other policies.

LIFE+ has an endowment of 2 billion euros for the 2007-2013 period. This money is to be used to co-fund environmental and natural protection projects.

For the 2007-2013 period, at least 50% of LIFE+ funds have been set aside for nature and biodiversity conservation measures. LIFE+ works through calls for proposals published on the LIFE programme's website and the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU). Projects can be proposed by public and private organisations and institutions.

Types of projects supported

The LIFE+ project has three cornerstones :

  • "Nature and biodiversity" : consolidating EU policy and law on nature and biodiversity, continuing to develop and implement the Natura 2000 network, and achieving the international aim of halting the loss of biological diversity by 2010;
  • "Environmental policy and governance" : developing innovative tools, monitoring European environmental protection policy, evaluating and monitoring the state of the environment, and offering support for better environmental governance through increased participation by interested parties to consultations and policy implementation;
  • "Information and communication" : diffusing information to raise awareness in various audiences on environmental issues and encouraging positive dynamics in the field.

Why LIFE+ co-funding for the Biovalsan project ?

The European Commission approved the Biovalsan project for two reasons: the scientific interest of implementing innovative industrial equipment for recycling biomethane and the project's impact on reducing greenhouse gas emissions locally.
European co-funding of this pilot project will validate the technology used and promote its development on the European scale.
