The Biovalsan project

The Urban Community of Strasbourg has ambitious environmental goals. This includes a Climate Plan exceeding by 50% the targets set by the Grenelle Environment Law for 2020, which aims at reducing the emission of greenhouse gases, improving energy efficiency and using renewable energy sources.

One core aim of the strategy implemented to meet these aims is recycling household waste and wastewater as energy sources through anaerobic digestion, i.e., converting these resources into 'green' natural gas.

Biovalsan at the heart of this initiative

In line with the Urban Community of Strasbourg's objectives, Biovalsan was created in 2011. It was the result of the cooperative efforts and proactive stance of three partners involved in sustainable development: Lyonnaise des Eaux, Degrémont Services and Réseau GDS.

Biomethane: a green and renewable energy source

With a treatment capacity of 1,000,000 inhabitant equivalents, the Wantzenau Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) is the fourth largest WWTP in France. The volume of biogas produced by this facility's digesters represents a potential energy generation capacity of 16 GWh/year, which is equivalent to the annual needs of 5,000 low-energy consumption homes. Biovalsan's purpose is to utilise this resource for the Strasbourg community's benefit, based on a short, local processing model.

A project co-funded by the European Union project

The technological, scientific and environmental value of Biovalsan was acknowledged by the European Commission, which included this project in its co-financing LIFE+ programme. Thus in 2012 Biovalsan became a project with strong national and European visibility, attracting great interest and attention from public figures, the scientific community and academic world.
